Gum Healing Journey Post-Extraction
The time it takes for a tooth extraction site to heal varies on factors like the tooth’s location, type, and your body’s healing capacity. But on average, your sockets will heal after around 14 days. However, at the extraction site, expect the gum tissues to be tender and sensitive. You must steer clear of chewing too much food near the area of action and avoid brushing too much there.
The Tissue Healing Timeline
Here is a breakdown of the entire process.
First 24 Hours
During the initial 24 hours post-extraction, blood clots form, and the stitches help in the healing process. Expect minor pain and some bleeding during this time, which is easily handled via prescribed painkillers.
2 Days Post Extraction
The first 2 days demand your extra attention as healing occurs rapidly. Bleeding and stiffness at the extraction site are a normal occurrence during this phase.
3 Days After D-Day
When the timeline touches day 3, the empty tooth socket is virtually healed, with minimal swelling. Some tenderness may be seen, but there should be no pain or discomfort.
1 Week Post Extraction
By the 10th day, the clot should be fully formed and functional. If you have non-dissolving stitches, they may be scheduled for removal by your dental care expert. Any discomfort or bleeding at this point warrants an emergency call to your dentist.
2 Weeks Post Extraction
Around the 14-day mark, the sockets are nearly completely healed, but the extraction site remains tender. Caution is still exercised to avoid infection or damaging the new gum tissue.
3+ Weeks Post Extraction
By 3-4 weeks, the healing process is essentially complete. You may feel some sensitivity, but nothing major. The focus shifts to proper cleaning and flossing to prevent debris accumulation.
Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Recovery
Once your recovery is full swing, here are a few things to make sure that this period is smooth.
- Follow Your Dentist’s Advice
Following your dentist’s post-extraction advice is crucial. Whether they have given you dietary restrictions or activity limitations, adhere to their recommendations religiously. - Manage Bleeding
Post-surgery bleeding is quite common and nothing to be worried about. All you need to do is gently bite down on surgical sterile gauze provided by your dentist. However, if bleeding does not go down after 24 hours, seek help. - Soft Diet is Essential
After extraction, stick to soft and cool foods, such as soup, broths, smoothies, etc., for a few days. Avoid tough and crunchy foods, as well as extreme temperatures. - Keep Your Head Up and Rest
Rest is vital for recovery. Keep your head elevated for at least a day to prevent excessive blood flow to the surgery site.
